A Beginner’s Guide to Sewing Machines

Sewing machines can be fun but may be daunting at first. Be sure to read your manual – most brands provide easy-to-understand diagrams!

Keep an eye out for seam allowance guides on top of your machine; these usually feature small numbers and arrows to show the way.
Basics

Sewing machines provide an efficient means for joining two pieces of fabric together by stitching a line through both layers. Their operation makes getting started simple enough for even novice sewers to start sewing quickly.

Locate the power switch, usually on the right side near the bobbin case. Next, locate a spool pin – usually made of metal or plastic – which holds thread spools securely in place. Also search for thread guides containing small numbers and arrows which show how best to thread your machine.sewing machine connected to computer

As soon as your thread is ready, pull it through the thread guide and loop it around the takeup lever or hook, located on the front left side of your machine. Push it through the eye of the needle. Some machines include an option for locking beginning stitches; it is recommended at the beginning of any seam to do this for best results; otherwise consult your manual.
Stitches

Sewing machines offer a vast array of decorative stitches to help create products such as teddy bears, costumes for special events and recycled clothing. However, this range can be daunting to those just getting into sewing.

Straight stitch is the primary stitch, comprising of uniformly spaced stitches of any size and regular spacing that can be used for multiple tasks. A zig-zag stitch may also prove helpful when hemming stretchy fabrics that tend to pucker.

One essential stitch to master when working on clothes is the ladder stitch, which creates near-invisible seam closure and hem finishings. However, it can be challenging to do properly so practicing on scrap fabric first is recommended. Many sewing machines also come equipped with multiple buttonhole stitch options so you can sew buttonholes more efficiently than ever – learning different stitches will not only increase quality of finished products but will bring happier customers.
Feet

Sewing machine feet are specifically tailored for particular tasks, and misusing one could result in frustration and poor sewing results. Therefore, it’s essential to understand their purpose and how best to utilize them for optimal sewing results.

An overcast foot creates an edge similar to that produced by a serger/overlocker without cutting. A zipper foot is essential if you plan on adding any zippers as it allows you to sew closer to their teeth than traditional sewing methods allow. A tape attaching foot can also be useful when working with narrow ribbons and rick-rack.

Although learning the fundamentals of your sewing machine and its various feet may be intimidating, taking the time to familiarize yourself with its basic functions will allow you to sew 90% of garments and projects successfully. Troubleshooting

Skipping stitches or breaking thread can be one of the most frustrating experiences for both beginner and seasoned sewists alike. Although its cause could vary widely, there are some troubleshooting techniques you can try before consulting a professional for assistance.

Start by checking that your machine is properly connected to power, then carefully untangle any thread/fabric tangles from within it, inspect for foreign objects which might be blocking needle/bobbin case openings and refer to your manual for instructions on clearing jams or disassembling parts for cleaning.

Make sure that you use thread that matches both the fabric and machine, and that the needle size is appropriate. This should resolve most problems; however if they continue, consult a professional who can diagnose any further problems and repair them if needed.
