Everything about Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer are present on either side of the backbone and their main function is to remove the waste and make urine. Kidney cancer occurs when there is a growth of tumor on one or both the kidneys.

The signs of kidney cancer are such as –

  • Blood in the urine
  • Presence of a lump in the abdomen
  • Pain in the sides
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss

Risk factors for Kidney Cancer are –

  • Smoking- it not only increases the probability of lung cancer but it also increases the chances of kidney cancer.

Types of kidney Cancer are such as –

  • Renal cell carcinoma – it is the most common form of kidney cancer and starts in the lining of the renal tubules. This cancer can easily spread to the other parts of the body mostly the brain and the lungs.
  • Clear cell renal cell carcinoma – also called the conventional renal cell carcinoma and is about 80% of all renal cell carcinoma cases.
  • Some of the rare kidney cancers are – papillary renal cell carcinoma and translocation renal cell carcinoma.

Diagnostic tests for kidney Cancer –

  • Imaging tests such as ultrasound which uses high energy sound waves to form the picture of the kidney.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging – uses radio waves to form the image.
  • CT scan – detailed picture of the pelvis is obtained.
  • Urinalysis – check for the presence of glucose, proteins and blood cells in the urine signifying faulty kidneys.
  • Biopsy – cells are examined and the cells are obtained by inserting a thin needle into the tumor.

Treatment of Kidney Cancer –

  • Surgery – removal of the complete kidney or the part of kidney having tumor.
  • Radiation therapy – use of X-rays to shrink or eradicate the cancerous cells.
  • Chemotherapy – use of medications which stop the growth of the cancer cells or by stopping the division of the cancer cells.
  • Immunotherapy – use of medications which affect the immune system and they attack the cancer cells
  • Targeted therapy – use of medications which identify and attack the specific cancer cells and factors. For example – monoclonal antibodies and kinase inhibitors.
